MA2600 around the world-posted 08/29/02
How are ya? This is Siokaos writing from an ocean away amidst the beautiful terrain of Ireland. In Ireland, there's beer, and where there's beer, there will be geeks! I spent a few days up in doolin drinking and chatting with a bunch of free software lads. Their quotes file will be grand, including my explanation of the free paradigm to my cousin in the pub as, "Free as in free beer, not as in free speech". We're having great 'crack' here. Freaks and geeks, featuring a nice fellow with a shirt that says "£!/perl is my bitch'...

Oh No! http://www.usdoj.gov/kidspage/netiquet.htm - see exactly what the USGOV thinks about hackers. This is what they are teaching to the youth of america about our culture.

 1. Define a hacker. A hacker is someone who breaks into computers sometimes to read private e-mails and other files.
HACKERS INVADE PRIVACY.
HACKERS DESTROY "PROPERTY" IN THE FORM OF COMPUTER FILES OR RECORDS.

HACKERS INJURE OTHER COMPUTER USERS BY DESTROYING THEIR INFORMATION

IE Gopher exploit -posted 06/06/02

Online Solutions Oy send an report to microsoft on May 20th about a vulnerability they found in internet explorer 5.x. It has to do with content handling and the gopher protocol. Read up:

Quote:

"The problem is in the way Internet Explorer handles the Content-type and Content-disposition HTTP headers of a web server reply. With certain combinations of specially crafted reply strings, the browser can be made first to start downloading the file without asking for confirmation from the user, and then to open it - or in this case, run it.

Exploiting the vulnerability doesn't usually require administrative access on the web server, or a real web server at all. What it requires is the ability of the malicious user to control the HTTP headers mentioned above."

ChangeOfMeetingplace?? -posted 4/07/02

At the April meet, the idea was brought forth to change the meetingplace from the basement of the JavaNet? Cafe on Main St. in Northampton, to the food court at the Hampshire Mall (on the Hadley commercial strip near 'ZooMass?'). The main reason for the idea was to get greater exposure in the community, and thus foster interest in passers-by, as well as to try and dispel the notion of hackers being evil, socially inept losers (as for how much of that would be dispelled, well, it's up to you :P). However, the motion was somewhat opposed by much of the group, so it seems the issue is still largely up in the air.

Geeks participate against WEF

"The Electronic Disturbance Theater, RTMark, and Federation of Random Action are taking credit for crashing the Web site of the World Economic Forum on Thursday morning with a virtual sit-in."

"We pity the fools who blindly believe that corporate globalization and the worldwide imposition of neoliberal economic policies can withstand the mounting tide of grassroots resistance,"

kuro5hin.org in trouble.

The popular, alternative news service kuro5hin, has aparantly been probed by the united states secret service, kicking them when they are down (from server problems). Check out [kuro5hin] for more information. /me likes the phrase: "I urge that if you are a citizen of the US, you encourage your leaders to look to other countries that live with terrorism (such as Northern Ireland), and teach them how those people can fight terrorism without also fighting civil liberties."

New worm is propogating across internet.

If you haven't already heard: PCs running Windows have a new security problem to deal with: a screensaver attachment (usually "goner.scr") is showing up in peoples mailboxes, with a message like:
"When I saw this screen saver, I immediately thought about you I am in a harry, I promise you will love it!".
The virus spreads through victims' ICQ and Microsoft mail clients contact lists. It's negative effects include attempts at removing antivirus, firewall, and simple network filtering software.

If anyone has experience with this, or other worms, feel free to start a new wiki node.
